About Scottish Outposts

Honest, first-hand guides to touring Scotland — written from the driver’s seat, not a desk.

Who’s behind it

I’m Kevin Foulds, and Scottish Outposts is mine. I’m based in Alloa, in central Scotland, and I’ve been living and travelling in motorhomes and campervans for over 40 years — long enough to have made most of the mistakes so you don’t have to.

For two years (2023–2025) my wife, our dog and I toured Scotland more or less full-time in our Hymer 594 — from the Cowal peninsula and the length of Argyll to the Kyles of Bute, Kintyre, Fife, East Lothian and up into Caithness on the NC500. Every place on this site is somewhere we’ve actually been, and every photo is my own.

Why this site exists

Most Scotland travel content is recycled, sponsored, or written by someone who’s never been. I wanted the opposite: real routes, real parking and overnight spots, real prices and the honest downsides — the ferry that’s a nightmare to book, the road that’s too tight for a big van, the “famous” spot that isn’t worth it, and the quiet corner next door that is.

It’s built as a proper reference — evergreen pages you can trust and come back to, kept up to date, not a stream of throwaway posts.

Experience & expertise

  • 40+ years owning, living in and travelling by motorhome and campervan.
  • 2 years touring Scotland intensively — routes, ferries, wild-camp spots, and the practicalities of a big motorhome on small roads.
  • First-hand only: if we haven’t been, it isn’t here — anything provisional is clearly labelled.
  • My own photography throughout, with GPS-mapped walks and drives.

How we keep it free (and honest)

Scottish Outposts is reader-supported. We earn through advertising and affiliate links — at no extra cost to you. It never buys a good review. Full details in our Affiliate Disclosure, Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.
